Cynwyd Heritage Trail Links Open Space to City

The Cynwyd Heritage Trail in Lower Merion is unique in that it is two trails in one: a gravel path for those on foot and a paved path for those on wheels. A former line on the Schuylkill Valley Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the trail is fairly easy and accessible. However, this section of the rail line includes some of the steepest grades of the entire system, so wheelchair users may need some help on inclines.

Like other rail trails, most of the trail is unshaded, but the scenery changes make the Cynwyn Heritage Trail more interesting than most. The 1.8-mile trail (3.6 out and back) offers a view of Manayunk, passes Westminster and West Laurel Hill Cemeteries and ends (or begins) at Cynwyd Station Park. Those interested in a longer walk can use the Manayunk bridge to access trails on the other side of the river, such as the Schuylkill River Trail. It is also a great trail for meandering: Signage along the trail goes into some of the history of the area.

According to the Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail’s website, there are plans to extend the Cynwyd Heritage Trail down to City Ave, the Mann Music Center, and even to the Schuylkill riverfront. For now, the trail offers a nice way to spend a couple hours, whether you plan an out-an-back or arrange for transportation on both ends.
