Family-fun Series!! ~ “Shelter Building!”

Lost in the woods! Need shelter for the night! What can you do? This program will teach you how to construct a shelter out of natural materials. Each participant will help construct a real debris hut deep in the forest of Silver Lake Nature Preserve. Families & individuals welcome!

Evans-Mumbower Mill Open House & Trail Walk

Tours of Evans-Mumbower Mill are typically given from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the third Sunday of the month in the spring, summer and fall. Watch an introductory DVD program about the history of milling on the Wissahickon Creek; a costumed guide will take you for a fascinating tour to see the mill in operation.  After the tour you can browse in the museum and see artifacts from the Mill’s archaeological dig. After touring the Mill, take a walk along the former millrace that fed the mill, to locate the remnants of the dam in the Upper Wissahickon. The walk will begin at 2:00 pm and last approximately an hour. Please wear sturdy shoes or boots!

Connect With Nature—Whooo Lives In The Forest?

New Jersey has eight species of owls that over-winter in the state. From the petite Saw Whet to the mighty Great Horned, owls are primarily nocturnal with excellent eyesight and hearing. This engaging program features an assortment of hands-on materials and includes activities where participants will learn about owl characteristics, owl habitat, and owl calls. Preregister by calling RNC at 609-261-2495. There is no charge for this program, but donations are encouraged.

Saturday Morning Bird Walk

These walks are a great way to meet new people and enjoy casual conversation with other bird enthusiasts. Your guide will pick out the best spot to visit within the area. Bring along binoculars and a bird identification book, if you have them. Time Note: The bird walks are from 7-9am March through October, then changing to 8-10am November through February

Reindeer Guide for Kids at Norristown Farm Park

Reindeer have special adaptations that allow them to live in the far north. Learn about their adaptations and the differences between reindeer, caribou, elk, and local white -tailed deer during the Reindeer Guide for Kids program at Norristown Farm Park. Hear a seasonal story, play reindeer games, and make a reindeer craft. Meet in the salt wing of the barn. This program is suitable for children ages three and older with adult accompaniment.
